Traveling for Breast Reconstruction Surgery

Breast & Body Center of Austin is centrally located in Austin, Texas.  Our offices are near major highways for easy accessibility.

Numerous patients travel from various parts of the world for breast reconstruction with our surgeons.  If you are traveling from out of town for breast reconstruction with our team, we have put together several resources for transportation and lodging.  While insurance typically covers treatment and reconstruction procedures, the cost of transportation is fully patient responsibility.  Some patients may qualify for financial assistance through some of the programs and organizations listed below.

Sources of Assistance for Air Travel Costs

  • American Cancer Society Air Miles Program
    Call 1-800-227-2345 to find out if you are eligible for help with air travel.
    This program is designed to help patients with costs of travel for cancer-related reasons.  The program operates off of commercial airline frequent flier miles donated by members of the following airlines:

    • Delta SkyWish Program
    • United Untied Mileage Plus Charity Miles Program
    • Frontier Airlines EarlyReturns Mileage Program
  • If you qualify for the program, tickets are provided on a one time per year basis, and are valid within the US only.  Tickets may be provided to escort or travel companion if medically necessary. The ACS Air Miles program is a joint effort between Mercy Medical Airlift (MMA)/National Patient Travel Helpline (NPATH) and the American Cancer Society.
  • The National Patient Travel Center (NPTC) refers patients to over 3 dozen charitable or special discounted patient air transport service groups. NPTC can help patients find a program to assist with the costs of air travel for illness-related reasons, including air ambulance services if qualified.Contact the NPTC at 1-800-296-1217, or www.patienttravel.org.

    The American Cancer Society Road to Recover Program has numerous affiliated hotels in the area that offer discounted room rates for patients when available.  Contact them a minimum of 2 Fridays before the week of travel forhotel/lodging assistance availability.

Local transportation assistance for Ambulatory cancer patients

  • Breast Cancer Resource Center AsSisters Client Assistance Program provides support and assistance for women including ground transportation to/from appointments, light housekeeping, prescription pick-up, etc.  512-524-2470 x 105
  • American Cancer Society Road to Recovery Program is available locally to assist with ground transportation to/from appointments for patients who qualify.  Patient must be ambulatory.  1-800-227-2345

Traveling for Cosmetic Surgery

At Breast & Body Center of Austin, we have some of the top surgeons in the nation and it is not uncommon that patients choose travel from various parts of the world to have surgery with us. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are dedicated to making your surgical and travel experience as smooth and convenient as possible. From your consult to your post-operative appointments, we are here to help you. At the time of scheduling your surgery, we will offer convenient pre-operative appointment times (generally within 5-7 days of your surgery date). Our staff can assist in providing you with hotel options in various areas in Austin, depending on your budget and personal preferences.

The recovery time and post-operative requirements while in Austin will vary for each procedure.We can also assist in referring and coordinating a private nurse to assist with daily self-care if needed after your surgery. This information can be supplied at the time of scheduling.

If you are flying to Austin for surgery, Austin-Bergstrom International Airport http://www.austintexas.gov/airport has several non-stop flights available with various airlines including American Airlines, JetBlue Airways, and United Airlines.
